Black bear hunts usually take place in spring or fall. The fur on bears is great in the spring and it’s a perfect time of year to chase bears – generally nice weather and very few other species in season make this a perfect warm-up (no pun intended!) for your hunting season. Some states and provinces only have fall bear seasons. Bears are starting to bulk up for the winter and often you may have the option to hunt other animals on the same trip.
Legacy Outdoors represents many of the best black bear outfitters in North America. Below you will find some info on the most popular locations to hunt black bears. If you don’t see a particular location you want to hunt bears, just give us a call! There are so many areas we can’t list them all.
Canada has some of the best black bear hunting in the world. The large vast areas with good black bear habitat lead to good populations of quality black bears. Black bears are found in almost every province of Canada. The western provinces usually have more color phase black bears, like brown, cinnamon, and blond. Some provinces allow the hunting of bears over bait, while some only allow spot and stalk style black bear hunting. Trophy quality is excellent with a real possibility of bringing a bear home approaching both Boone and Crockett all time score and 7 foot.
Black bear hunts in Alaska are very productive, either as a single species or combination hunt. We offer boat-based hunts as well as lodge or spike camp options. We have areas in Alaska where 7-foot black bear are taken regularly.
Black bear hunts in the lower 48 don’t always seem as exciting as the northern hunts, but there are actually many great options from rough backcountry hunts to easy stand hunts in easy terrain. Some of the eastern hunts have incredibly large bears. Out of hundreds of Boone and Crocket entries over the past 10 years, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania lead the entries by a fair amount, but guided opportunities are typically greater in the Western US – with several states and types of hunts and hunting methods to choose from.
