Whitetail Deer Hunts

Most hunters dream of that crisp, clear November morning – the day is dawning and you hear a grunt and the crunch of leaves as a buck is coming down the trail, hot on a doe.  Steam pouring out of its mouth, the sun gleaming off that massive rack, it gives you that perfect broadside shot and you harvest the deer of a lifetime.

Whitetail are undoubtedly king when it comes to big game hunting popularity.  Whitetail are estimated to number over 30 million animals in North America and are the most popular big game species hunted in the world.  The areas we hunt have good populations and offer above average success rates on trophy class deer.   The whitetail deer is very widespread and is hunted in more than 40 US states and 9 provinces in Canada.  Today is the golden age for whitetail hunting – with states managing herds for trophies as well as extensive private land management practices, big deer can be found in many places where they weren’t decades ago. With that said, there are areas that are better at producing record book deer of the Boone and Crockett minimum scores of 170 for typical and 195 for non-typical.  In fact, at Legacy Outdoors we have a passion for HUGE whitetail.  So whether you are looking for a good representative whitetail or one for the books, give us a call.

Choosing the type of Whitetail Deer hunt!

Whitetail deer habitat can vary greatly – large blocks of mast producing forest, soybean and corn fields with small woodlots, CRP areas, river bottoms, cedar thickets, brush country, huge alfalfa or milo crop pivots, mountains, rolling country, or flat land, they can be found almost anywhere in North America.  Do you want to use archery, crossbow, muzzleloader, shotgun or rifle?  Western spot and stalk or tree stand, ground blind, or shooting house?  Calling, rattling or ambush?  First timer looking for a nice deer or seasoned veteran looking for a true trophy or just a different experience in a new state or province?  Going solo or going with a group of friends?  Legacy Outdoors can tailor a  hunt to suit almost anyone of any physical abilities.  In most areas we hunt, tags are over the counter or outfitter/landowner provided.  So whatever your abilities or desires are, after a discussion, we can find the perfect hunt for you.  No matter what kind of whitetail deer hunt you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered.

When to hunt Whitetail Deer!

Whitetail Deer are typically hunted from August to February.   Early seasons are very good, especially for archery, as bucks are still in bachelor groups and are on feeding patterns.  And then there are the famed pre-rut, rut, and second rut time periods when big bucks throw caution to the wind.  In most areas of the country, late October through November is considered prime time.   Post rut late season hunts can be fantastic too, as the cold weather forces deer to feed to bulk back up for the winter.  So whatever time of year you want to hunt, we have it.

Best places to hunt Whitetail Deer!

Whitetail Deer Hunts in Canada

Whitetail deer in Canada tend to have very heavy body weights and can have massive, deep chocolate racks with character.  We can archery or rifle hunt early seasons in velvet all the way through the rut and into December.  Most November and December hunts focus on feeding areas for does which brings the big bucks in. Hunts are not too physical and generally involve sitting in a heated ground blind waiting patiently.  Tags are outfitter provided and we take some great record book animals on these hunts.  Often, we can combo a mule deer hunt with whitetail as well.

Whitetail Deer Hunts in the United States

We hunt around a dozen US states for whitetail deer and during all seasons – archery, crossbow, muzzleloader, shotgun and rifle.  We offer hunts in several western states, mid-western states, and a few northeast states.  High success 130-150 class deer hunts are reasonable expectations for several of the hunts, but we do have areas and outfitters that routinely produce deer in the 150-170 class, with many 170+ deer and a few 200 inchers taken each year.  So let’s have a discussion on what type of experience you are looking for and we can narrow down the choices for you.
